The core doctrine of Christianity is that we cannot redeem ourselves -- we don't have the coin to do it -- and therefore Christ had to pay the price of our redemption on the cross. But in human society, a transgressor against the mores of the tribe may buy back their welcome into society by some act of repayment. Often they are redeemed at a discount, since the tribe has an interest in maintaining membership and will welcome back the reformed sinner who shows willing.
