Timeline for My story is written in English, but is set in my home country. What language should I use for the dialogue?

I was taught both French and German at school, but not a word of Spanish. I have come upon stories set in the southern US that use a few (Latin American) Spanish phrases for colour, and that was distracting enough. | |
