May 2, 2019 at 0:40 | comment | added | Stackstuck | "quantum supremacy" is a meaningless word, though...by your linked article, it is "quantum computers outpacing non-quantum computers", and thus the distinction would presumably be meaningless for aliens, who would have no way of knowing what our progress on conventional tech is!

Jan 19, 2019 at 9:15 | comment | added | Komi Golov | Given that the entire premise sounds like a thoroughly sci-fi work to me, could you explain why you expect/want it to appeal to people who don't like sci-fi, even if the explanations were kept to a minimum?

Jan 18, 2019 at 21:39 | comment | added | Krupip | @kikirex Not really? Sure the reapers wipe out civilization every so often, but they don't kill all life, and take advantage of some of the tech or something along those lines. The reapers purpose of destroying civilization is a bit different than this story, and beyond that it had nothing to do with the fermi paradox, the destruction of adv civ is the only real similarity AFAICT. There are certainly enough differences that I wouldn't go squacking that this is unoriginal...
Jan 18, 2019 at 20:24 | comment | added | user91988 | @kikirex That's true, but that's more like the huge, overarching plot that's going on in the background. While the ME games are about the Reapers in the end, most of the story isn't really about them. I'd say ME is much more about the mass relays and humanity's expansion and political dealings with other races. No one even knows what the Reapers are doing.

Jan 18, 2019 at 19:11 | comment | added | kikirex | @only_pro In the great lines (mild spoilers ahead), Mass Effect can be summarized as: "...the Reapers remain outside the Milky Way waiting for organic life to develop and discover the Mass Relays, before harvesting them when they reach their peak". But I agree the setting and overall story may differ from your game.

Jan 18, 2019 at 15:57 | comment | added | Eth | Those aliens are screwed. At some point, intelligences are going to reach interstellar stage without having developed quantum computers first, and their probes will detect killed-off worlds. And one will guess that they rely on quantum computers to detect them, or simply get lucky. It will stay camouflaged instead it is ready to strike the Berserker down - and interstellar warfare favours the first-striker. Berserker policy is self-defeating.
Jan 18, 2019 at 14:58 | comment | added | Bridgeburners | Are you concerned about whether your method of alien superluminal quantum detection is scientifically accurate? Because it is not. So if that's okay, then you can take further creative license to make the concept easier to digest.

Jan 17, 2019 at 21:30 | comment | added | Andrey | After leaving my somewhat negative answer I wanted to add something constructive in the comments. How about instead this race has left probes on most planets over the last billion years. When a probe detects an event that means this culture may become a threat, it wakes up and releases it's weapon.

Jan 17, 2019 at 18:39 | comment | added | SFWriter | We are close to singularity. Can you world-build that the invasion can only occur when the alien species finds a virtual intelligence on Earth advanced enough to speak with? This might explain the 'only today' part.
