+1 for The Lottery. I read a lot, and one of the first things I did when this became a problem was to re-read Edgar Allan Poe's works. His Cask of Amontillado is 2340 words, The Tell-tale heart is even less at 2148. My story already has only 2 main characters with a few supporting characters, but I guess I'll trim the back-stories a bit and see where I'm at.
